FMEA as a Tool for Managing Risks in ICT Projects, based on the PMBOK

Project management has been consolidated into organizations due to its high added value, allowing that project results are delivered on time, budget, scope and quality. This is specially important for ICT projects, for which innovation is usually present. For such, the correct resource allocation, and effective management require application of project management techniques and tools. In this sense, risk management enables the identification of project threats, so that negative impacts be mitigated or eliminated. However, risk management techniques are still not widely used by companies. In this context, this paper objective is to evaluate the FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) usage as a tool for mitigating risks in ICT projects, based on the practices of the PMBOK. This feasibility is verified by a case study in a transnational autoparts enterprise. The results show that FMEA is an important tool to complement risks qualitative analysis, and contributes to project success.
